Eight out of ten Americans experience low back pain at some point in their lives. Most can avoid the discomfort of low back pain with just a few minor changes in how they move and lift things.
Avoid prolonged stooping or squatting when gardening. Instead, kneel on one knee, or sit on a stool for better body mechanics. Take frequent breaks. Perform some gentle back bends, placing your hands at your waist for support, when you have been standing for a long time.
Squat to lift heavy objects. Let your legs, not your back, support the weight you are lifting.
Take a few minutes to warm-up with stretching and aerobics when playing sports. Stretch again to cool down at the end of your activity. This helps prevent muscle injury and soreness.
Golf is another sporting activity that can place high stresses on your back. Be sure to stretch properly and perform warm-up swings prior to going for the green.
